did you join the mentor program? they hook you up with a later year student and they help you around. i was gonna join (as a mentor) but i can't be screwed signing up and wasting 3 hours attending some induction program. but i can be your (or any other first year) "unofficial" mentor if need...

first year clashes are rare but if it happens you have to take it on the chin and time manage better. rock up to one on one week, and alternate. that said attending lectures isn't mandatory to pass or even get good grades. people say they are but it depends heavily on the subject.
