    2u Mathematics Marathon v1.0

Annuities is 2U, but this one is particularly hard, since it's not straightforward and requires fiddling with the resulting equation. You might want to try an easier one to keep it 2U. :) I_F

please help - two questions (integration, induction)

    No, it's u = (1-x2). u = (1-x)2 is just as hard as u = (1-x) to do. :p I_F

    Integration Question!

Firstly, since we're spinning about the y-axis, you need to rewrite the equation in terms of y: y = 4 - x2 4 - y = x2 x = ±√(4 - y) It's a volume, and since we're spinning about the y-axis, we don't need to have the plus/minus (since the volume will go through the plus and minus square roots...

please help - two questions (integration, induction)

Are you sure the substitution's u = (1-x)? That makes life very difficult, if not impossible. Using the substitution u = 1-x2 is straightforward (find du/dx and hence du, sustitute, integrate, substitute original expression back in). I_F

    Chemistry Tritation, Chemistry Olympiad, RACI

I got an Excellence Award in the RACI (Royal Australian Chemical Institute, I assume you're saying) comp last year without any other books. It's not really that difficult, since it's multiple choice, and often you can make decent guesses through elimination. I_F

    Forensic Science UAI

UAI is determined by supply and demand for courses. So either more places were made available, or not many people wanted to do Forensics. It's almost impossible to predict which way cut-offs will go year after year, so just try your best and aim high to give yourself the best possible chance. :)...

    Integration

To cut a long story short, you can't integrate it without having done the exponentials and logarithms chapter. You cannot integrate anything to the power of -1 (as this function is) through the normal way. The result is: [loge (x - 7)]139 (since the derivative of the loge f(x) is f'(x)/f(x))...

    exp and log q

Just a note, this isn't exponentials and logs - it's exponential growth and decay, which is under Applications of Calculus to the Physical World. :p Anyways, for the first part: y = Aekt (formula for exponential/natural growth, k is a constant) dy/dt = k.Aekt = k1y (given - k1 is the...

    hard Rate of Change question

    V = (1/3)πr2h but h = r, so V = (1/3)πr3 dV/dr = πr2 so dr/dV = 1/πr2 dV/dt = 24 So dr/dt = dV/dt . dr/dV (chain rule) = 24/πr2 S = πr2 so dS/dr = 2πr dS/dt = dr/dt . dS/dr (chain rule) = 24/πr2 . 2πr = 48/r cm2/s but r = h = 16 so dS/dt = 48/16 cm2/s = 3 cm2/s There we go. It can...

    changing equilibrium and pressure

If the pressure increases, equilibrium will shift to the shift with less gas molecules or less moles of gas. This is because equal volumes of gas at equal temperature and pressure inhabit the same volume. So less gas = less volume = less pressure, to minimise the disturbance (as per Le...

    Trusted Computing?

No, it says that Vista is likely to have some form of TC support. It won't have the Palladium with all the bells and whistles and walls. And in another Wiki article: Microsoft's initiative is called NGSCB (formerly Palladium). A full implementation of NGSCB is not expected to be a part of the...

Projectile motion assumes no wind resistance or other pesky effects that throw calculations off. Besides, if the angle was "less than 15 degrees", what exactly would it be? It's just too hard to work with. :p I_F

    Trusted Computing?

Someone will find a way around it. That is, if privacy advocates don't manage to nuke it. Microsoft's Palladium has been delayed and/or scaled back, last I heard, though I could be wrong. They wouldn't bother putting all the new security features in Vista if Palladium was on time and working...
