    4-Unit Maths?

I'm considering doing 4U, but I'm weighing the advantages of doing 4U and keeping my 2U HSC mark from this year (I'm accelerated). Oh yes, and the common question...'how hard do you have to work'.... you have to work uber uber uber uber hard.

    Organising Work (merged)

Re: best way to organise books? In Year 11 I stuck to old-school and I just got an exercise book and stuck in (well I was supposed to stick in) all my sheets. I'm going for folders and loose leaf paper as of next term.

Recommended Texbooks/Study Guides for Preliminary HSC?

Re: Recommended Texbooks/Study Guides? Hey better they give you Jacaranda in Year 12, instead of not giving you Jacaranda at all. And yeah... I'd like to know what BCS is as well.

    How many units?

I'm probably going to do 12 units, whether i get into a distinction course or not... and i don't see anything wrong with it. I mean as long as you can manage your time well and study hard for all subjects... I can see benefits of doing 12 units. However, you must be enjoying the units you are...

    Do you have a tutor?

I don't have a private tutor... but I do go to a coaching college for maths. Only started going when I started accelerating in mathematics. Might consider getting a tutor for my other subjects... if I find it hard to keep up in year 12, however for now... I don't think it's necessary for me to...

Not sure which one to pick up: Mathematics or English Extension 2

Yeah, I had the same situation as you... well not at this level. I was contemplating on whether I should have kept English Extension as well as Maths Extension. I realised that English Extension would probably take a lot of my time, and wouldn't be worth it because I wasn't enjoying it - and I'm...

Not sure which one to pick up: Mathematics or English Extension 2

Usually, I'd say... do what you like best. But it seems you don't really like maths or english. I'd say since you are beginning to like Mathematics, take Maths Extension 2 for the following reasons: - You said your marks aren't too good because of lack of study - you can always fix that - it's...

Exactly... Applications of Calculus to the Physical World.... Rates of Change, Exponential Growth and Decay, Simple Harmonic Motion, Projectile Motion... all seem more useful to me than knowing the s.a. of a cylinder.

Same here. Some people were having an argument with our teacher about the relevance of calculus and how it relates to 'real maths' (those individuals have been dropped from accelerated- thought I'd mention that) and our teacher showed us that, and that shut those people up. I found it quite...

    Dropped to General

I agree. As a strong supporter of mathematics... I personally wouldn't drop to general, nor would I advise anyone to drop to General - however he seems happy with this decision, and I support his decision and again - wish him the best of luck for his HSC.

Really? I havent seen a first principles question in all the past HSC papers I've done - but then again I've only done papers from a few schools. I have seen it in a few prelim papers though.

    Dropped to General

Cool. As long as you work hard, you should be able to do well in General Maths - because it's a lot easier than Advanced Maths and the Extension courses. Good Luck =]

Re: What school you at? I don't like it when school's have the same uniform... A fair few schools have a similar uniform to mine (senior)... except for our jumper - that's like uber bright and no school has a jumper quite as bright as mine.

You will rarely ever be asked to use first principles though. For differentiation... you would mainly need to remember the basic rule (don't know what it's called officially), the product, chain and quotient rule and how to differentiate logs and exponentials. Pretty easy.
