In these cadetships do the firms pay your Uni fees or do you have to pay them yourself?

If by Uni fees you mean HECS, no they don't pay that for you. They simply pay you a salary for your full time service, which you can use to pay your HECS if you wish

AFAIK there was no camp for us in our year but I suspect that it wouldn't be viable to have a camp anyway considering the number of cadets who we started with.

That being said, I heard that KPMG have a massive induction ceremony interstate for both grads and undergrads.

To the poster who asked about grads and undergrads- in my experience, we became very close with the people whom we did training with so the grads and undergrads got along pretty well. This may not be the case for everyone, but at least in my experience it has been. Since our cadetships have all finished, we still keep in touch with the grads and in fact are having a reunion dinner this week lol.
Thats good to hear!

nope, cause we earn more than the tax threshold so we'll have to pay tax.

Just got a call for an interview with RSM BirdCameron - shame I've already accepted PwC, heh.

Anyone else heard from them, or McGrathNicol? Got offered interviews for both, but haven't seen anyone else post these two firms (Who both looked very interesting)

Btw, that tax statement made my eyes bleed too - and I only do TVET Accoutning, heh. Silly Billy!!!

BDO Kendalls <---- does anyone know if this firm offers cadetships? didn't see it at the ICAA evening.
as someone in tax, it makes me want to cry in the corner and roll into the fetal position.

I thought RSM BirdCameron already had interviews? I'm probably wrong.

And when did McGrathNicol ring you?

hi just a general question

im tossing up cadetship offers from westpac and pwc

i want to work in finance not accounting.. but alot of people say that a few years in an accounting firm is really good for moving into finance

so in light of that do u think its worth starting off at pwc?

do u think an employer in a bank would prefer a cadet with westpac experience or pwc experience?

thoughts?

Depends what role you want to have in finance, and what roles you have been offered in both the institutions.

Westpac is a leading retail bank in Australia, and if you are in the institutional banking equivalent position, it'll be very beneficial for your career. However from what I've heard, the business cadetships (which is what I think you have) will have you working in a role which is predominantly accounting focussed.

Similarly for PwC, a leading professional services firm, it depends which line of service (i.e. tax or assurance) and what your client market will be. If you were in say, Assurance: Financial Services, then you would learn a LOT about the financial industry through both on the job training and specialist training, as well as just from auditing financial institutions. Whilst it's still accounting focussed, you need to understand how the actions and transactions of traders for example, flow through to hit the accounts which does require quite a degree of financial knowledge and understanding.

But ultimately though, it really depends what role you have been offered in each, and what career you want to pursue in the future- since 'finance' is quite broad!

As a cadet entering the division of "Business Services", what is really their role? do you just sit in the office all day and do the paperwork? or is it a combination of dealing with clients + paperwork?

It boggles the mind how some people who are straight out of high school and have probably been lucky to be earning over $150 a week are all of a sudden so infatuated with what they are going to be paid...

Ignore the pay - worry about more important things. Besides, in my experience the pay scale between firms will flucuate significantly over time (those that started on less are now earning just as much). Acconting is a competitive recruitment market and always will be.

Just askin, what is a good way to send them a rejection email, something in the line of:

"dear sir/madam.

I thank you for your consideration of myself for the cadetship position at ___________. I am sorry to announce that I have accepted a previous offer of employment. I thank you for the time and effort that has been placed in your recruitment process and hope for ___________ to have a prosperous future.

yours sincerely,

Panpeter"

what do you think?
