not as a simply as that
i think individualism goes too far when culture and welfare has to suffer (which of course happens with VSU)

i believe unions are a form of collectivism we shouldn't dispose of

Yesss.... There was great culture in the soviet union when collectivism was at its best
And hows bout cuba? I don't see much culture going on there.

I don't see the culture of uni's dying, i just see the culture being reborn... but of course, the unions won't go away, they'll still be there for those who want them.

well you failed to notice the subtlety of my argument which was finding a balance between liberalism and collectivism. obviously because i support unions i'm a communist :p

your last comment is amusing. care to share your thoughts on how culture will be reborn?? most supporters of VSU seem to envisage a university as degree factory. essentially paying, learning, leaving, getting job, etc etc.
how does your economic rationalist head fit in university culture??

bloody hell. how far right have we come if supporting student welfare and representation is considered communist??
this isn't exactly a black and white situation. the union doesn't destroy your individualism or anything.

Well it will be a new culture where u don't have people joining subsidised clubs and stuff to make friends, it'll be much more like the culture of the real world. (u kno, make friends?)

wow what a clever argument
people who are in clubs are obviously antisocial and aren't in tune with the 'real world'

i'm assuming that means the economic world btw

Look if the unions actually appeared to be useful and gave a shit I would support them, but until such a time then I won't, and I consider putting the collective above the indidual communism to an extent

No... you can be in a club, it's just that once the union subsidised clubs are gone, you'd have to form ur own club. But of course... that would be if vsu did manage to destroy unions (which it won't ).

Society, Culture exists outside of the walls of uni (SHOCK!!!). Besides, most people couldn't give a shit for what you consider culture, what's wrong with making friends and going out drinking and such?

The large unis in WA had up to 38% union membership, but, yes, the smaller unis did suffer a lot. If usyd has around 30% membership next year the majority of services will probably still be provided for members.

hahahah so now i'm against friends and drinking :p

fucken hell you are being incoherent
and apparently wanting to keep culture in universities means i'm unaware that it exists outside it (even though i study arts)

we're also conflating culture with friends now

going to classes and talking to people you know isn't what you'd call university culture. that's going to happen regardless, it happens everywhere. it's the collective activity and interests which are aided through clubs and societies... as well as swell drinking holes like Manning

perhaps they are more useful than you think?
though you may not buy subsidised food on campus the union is the only collective voice for students. should you run into administrative or legal issues one of the best (and free) sources of assistance is now gone.
perhaps this is what the government loves the best

Cuba has a very visible culture. There was enough culture for Lonely Planet at least, to dedicate an entire episode to the island.

As for Russia, I wouldn't say culture was repressed. The Soviet was a product of Russian culture.

I really dislike you Korn. Walrusbear is putting up a very mildly-left pro-USU argument, a good and constructive one in fact, while you stand on the Liberal field and accuse him of being a communist. You're a disgrace.

If he was accusing Howard and Nelson of being fascists and nazis, then such extreme and ignorant leftism might warrant a Red accusation, but he hasn't, you're blind support for VSU prevents you from even considering his arguments.

If i want legal advice I as well as anyone can go to Legal Aid (its free) and what kind of issues could I have with Administration?
