I think that 'nature' and 'nurture' work in conjunction/combination/concatenation/twain/duality in determining someone's 'intelligence'. You can have people who are 'naturally smart', but more who are both naturally so and have had an intellectually beneficial or stimulating upbringing..

As for myself personally, I'm scared of taking IQ tests..Feel that I'd 'choke' and then be deemed less intelligent than I actually am. Only indication I have are estimates I've been told by some of my teachers. (At least one believes with 'certainity' my IQ is above 130.. Although there are variables in these things.)

i disagree completely... in my group of friends alone there are people who work their butts off and then people who just cruise along doing just the amount that is required of them... ie handing in an assessment on time after completing it the weekend or night before... yet they all end up with extremely similar marks... with the people who dont work as hard on most occassions achieveing a higher result..
i dont think hsc is about how hard you have worked... i would say ive worked less this year than i have all through high school yet my marks have not slipped at all...
and the stuff about liking the subjects you do etc etc... well i hate all my subjects... except for english and i get pretty much the same marks in all of them.... so i dont know about that

Yeah I agree with Dazed, particluarly in Adv English. I see people in my class working their butts off yet still struggling to get decent marks, whereas I (and not being full of myself here cos I know most of the people on this board are probably better than me) found topping English or at least coming in the top 3 no hassle each time. I did the bare minumum of work cos I really didn't like it and it didn't interest me, but still got the marks. Lesson here: the HSC has got more to it than the amount of work you put in.

I really struggled in English, being a subject I hated and wasn't good at, but hard work paid off... I was able to snag the top position during the trials from one of the "smarter" students... felt great, all your work paying off :D

On the other hand, there are people who are just good at the subjects they do... probably something to do with the brain and how it handles info differently for each person... I guess you could consider that "naturally" smart... I wish I was one of them >_<

Well done.
I don't dispute that hard work gets you places, but its not all about hardwork alone and nothing natural.

omg that is exactly the same as me. i came 1st out of 117 , equal with another girl who WORKS HER ASS OFF. most of the people in the top ten also do nothing but work as well. meanwhile all i did was glance over sheets given to us in class prior to assessments.

why is it that poorer areas have poorer academic results

answer = environmental influeces
Why is it, maybe it might have something to do with the continual urbanisation of society and how human society has a tendancy to not move outside its tribe (in this case, the area in which a person lives), and those who manage to transcend their social class no matter what it is, is due to influencing factors such as a desire to find people with similiar traits. This might have something to do with poorer areas developing due to those less academic not transcending into more wealthy areas due to a society which financially rewards skilled labour that in turn needs higher academic results than unskilled labour.

Due to these boundaries in society, these divisions of areas arise and hence, generally people in poorer areas, except for anomylies, are not as academically gifted and only tend to socialise with those only in their area, hence a limitation of the gene pool they have access to, providing a genetic and heriditary basis to form an argument that it's not environment which solely influences academic behaviour, but genetics and heriditary characteristics which due to its effect on the environment, hinder the ability to provide the opportunities to limit the social imbreeding which occurs that cause these problems.

I think we all know our abilities and this is obviously a topic that comes up in the course of schooling...if you can't handle this topic maturely, don't post.

maturity huh

You call, bragging about how good you think you are to all your net friends mature ?

I can appreciate this post has some good points worth reading, I was only commenting on the excessive bragging that has been going on.

I don't think there is bragging cos most of the ppl on here are amazing 99+ers, so bragging is redundant cos most people on here are either as good or better than you.

4000th post YAY!!!!

That's because you've been institutionalised. I'm sure if I show this thread ( and have ) to people outside of this forum they agree with me.

It doesn't matter how "good" you think you are, or how good you really are - it's how they SAY it.

if that isnt bragging i dont know what is. does being a lazy fuck and not studying make you better than anyone? no, because honestly, the hsc is a mark. in the real world if you are lazy then you wont go anywhere and you'll see the people that are "dumber" then you going places because they put effort in.
