never a truer sentance spoken.. true that noone would care if the f?@#ing media didn't make such a big fuss ova nothing yeah you heard me right nothing..... heaps of ppl get killed everyday and this guy was actually smuggling drugs so what if it was for personal debt reasons it doesn't matter and it sure doen't justify the smuggling he got what he deserved i reckon

How is it false? Would the Australian media really be paying so much attention to it if it were someone of another nationality who was caught with drugs?

I don't have a problem with him being executed. Singapore have the death penalty. He broke the law in Singapore, thus he should be subject to their legal system. Those of you who have a problem with it, heed its warning.

Don't smuggle drugs over seas. Preferably, don't smuggle drugs at all!

such a barbaric, out-dated form of punishment such as execution by hanging should be outlawed. its not a reliable method and there is no reason why other forms of execution cant be carried out. in saying this, i am still finding it difficult to find reasons as to why capital punichment deserves a place in our modern society. ngyuens case has really opened my eyes and firmed my stance on this issue. over the past few days i have tried to imagine what he would be going through. knowing your life was over, having to say your last goodbyes, being measured to attain the length of rope needed to hang you successfully by the neck. i would be a petrified wreck. execution also brings an unfair punishment on to the family and friends of the prisoner. how could u see your son and not be in total dispair, knowing that you will never see him alive again? in relation to whether ngyuen deserved to die or not i think that there is no question that he did. i find it unbelievable that members are thinking otherwise. yes what he did was wrong and yes he should face certain consequences for doing it. but the fact of the matter is that drug smugglers are aiders of self-destruction, however they are not murderers. i dont condone what drug smugglers do but nor do i condone the actions drug takers. smugglers do not stick the needles into the arms of users. if you are studpid enough to take drugs then you too have to face the consequences of what youve done. ultimately it is the users decision to take substances. smugglers may give them the means to abuse their bodies but the majority of them (ngyuen included) do not force takers to continue using. anyway thats my opinion.
rest in peace

And if the Australian media doesnt report on something then the general public would never hear about it and nobody would care.

Though I do agree, it was quite bad. I was watching the news as it was being broadcast and at 9:00 a.m. and I pictured what it would look like and I wondered what state he would be in when he died. That made me feel kinda weird, I cant quite explain it.

Capital punishment is a polarising issue, thats why there are so many people who argue for and against it. The only issues I am finding with Van Ngyuen is how he was killed, and that the death sentence is mandatory for drug smuggling.

There are death penalty about drug crime everyday. If Aus are that opposed to death penalty then the protest should be held everyday. Obviously we only see aussie protesting against singapore for this case, just since an australian was involved.

so you are saying that morals are flexible so that whatever country you are in, then the law is what your morals should be? so the execution of homosexuals in Iran is perfectly moral because in that country homosexuality is wrong... lets all support a legal system based on where you live!

maybe you should take this quiz to sort out your morality issues http://www.philosophersnet.com/games/taboo.htm

because clearly your moral judgement is clouded as morals are supposed to be a set of ideals that one beleives in, not easily changed points of view based on where in the world you are standing. besides, dont give me "its their laws" bullshit, execution is illegal in the world anyways

and because i have a problem with the death penalty suddenly iam a likely drug smuggler? well its not like the deterent has to be execution, simple life in prison would do the trick

perhaps Australia should make a new peice of legislation

"Any citizen of Singapore caught perchasing Australian goods in Autralia will be executed"
The people of Singapore will look on this law as fair and just, because they broke the law in our country, so they should be subject to our legal system
Infact the whole world will come to love this law.

or perhaps " If you break a law that exists in your country whilst in Australia, you will be subject to the standard punishment your homeland uses"

that way if we catch any people from Singapore for example smuggling drugs, we can execute them in revenge, but i we catch say one of our own, or an American smuggling drugs we can let them off liightly because they are either our citizens, or a country with our ideals in mind.

the media has given focus because the man was australian
i can't speak for everyone (as you portend to) but while this particular case has brought capital punishment back to the forefront of public discussion it is a moral dilemma that has been around for a very long time. i'm guessing most people had a stance on capital punishment long before nguyen came around.
in any case, this argument is very silly and irrelevant. not only is it a dubious claim but the man's nationality doesn't make what happened any less contemptible.

He likes it, very much, but only if it's Chinese nationalism.
