I understand entirely--I've done it several times myself. The verse quoted contains Jesus saying the way to attain eternal life is to love God and love your neighbour. Essentially, this is salvation through works, and contradictory to current Protestan orthodoxy, which seems to be more Paul than Jesus at times.
