What a well thoughtout set of premises there...

Gillard isn't pushing a shit policy; Shit is a matter of perspective.
Gillard isn't pushing an unpopular policy; I disagree about VSU being unpopular, i know BOS polls aren't the most accurate but I feel it's somewhere around 50/50. Also keep in mind the ammount of advertising anti-vsu supporters have been throwing out there (millions of dollars worth).

The reason why Gillard is safe and Abbot is not is because the more violent people (over this issue) are on Gillard's side.
dude take it easy
it was a throwaway comment
no need to pull out the obvious ("shit is a matter of perspective" - thanks, i wasn't aware of that :p)

How many Labor Left candidates/supporters were physically attacked without provocation other than having left wing beliefs at the semester one elections?

It doesn't exactly take a great deal of effort to notice that our left comrades seem to be more, er, passionate, than most. Logic seems to dictate that if anyone was going to go nuts and be violent, it'd be them (Of course, if logic isn't good enough there's also earlier reports of pro-USU protests turning violent)?

On election day the cops had to be called to stop them harrassing (read as: throwing punches at) us.

pretty broad use of the word 'violent' if you're referring to the USU march incident

what happened at the elections last year?

Last semester pretty much everyone on the Liberal campaign was either pushed or had pamphlets ripped from their hands, and a few had socialists try to throw punches at them near Fisher.

It is a minority on the left, but the point is that all of them are on the left.

Also I'm so wearing my I <3 VSU shirt on Thursday.

Forgive me, but they certainly didn't look like they were sitting in a circle, holding hands and singing koombyah. :)
Are you referring to the 10 or so students acting in a violent manner (by Australian standards) out of up to 4000 at a rally that was described as 'generally well-behaved' by the police?

A 600g object thrown with enough force has the potential to do significant harm if it hits in the right place.

So it's somehow not an issue because not everyone was doing it? Obviously it's not the majority, my point was simply that a number of the rabid left seem to be, er, rabid, at least from what I've seen and experienced myself.

No, it's still an issue (even though the nature of the violence may be disputed), but it's a bit rich to associate so many students with the actions of a few.

arguably so can a rubber band flicked or bullet in the head

the actions were more immature than violent

i just think using 'violent' in this context is overstating it
unnecessarily tags the 'left' as presumably dangerous

My point was simply that it's fairly obvious why there was a perceived threat to his safety. I would have thought it was clear that I wasn't inferring that it'd be like throwing him to the lions, placing him at the mercy of the evil incarnate which is the left. Obviously the majority of people in attendance (Probably even all of them), would have been on their best behaviour, but it doesn't take a horde to put someone at risk, and if these actions have taken place in the past, there's nothing to stop it happening again (Or even something worse and not disputed). If an analysis of the venue was done and they concluded that it wasn't safe, then fair call.

Also, I'd argue that the association has been made by them turning up at a protest and doing things which are perceived as being violent, rather than me, but that's another story.
