Hi guys!
I'm a NEARLY yr 7 trying to transfer to Sydney Girls high school for entry into yr 8 (prepping early). I'm gonna go to a partially selective school and my last report (yr 6 semester 2) i did dance ensemble, green team, zone athletics and i came top in Maths Olympiad (have a medal to prove) along with top 10% and 25%. I got an A in maths and Bs for the rest except for Art which I got a C in. I know the basics in maths and im ok in general in the main subjects, but idk how fast paced the questions are what types they are in the Edutest. I need help in all of them basically Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics, and Written Expression. Does anyone know how to prep?? And do i have enough extra curriculars? should i try to join alot in yr 7?

PLS HELP IF ANYONE HAS ANY ADVICE. Tyyy :)
For selective schools I feel like you need to get As in the core subjects (math science Eng) and have a dominantly A report. However, your year 7 report is weighted most cause it’s the most recent one so really try get As in every subject in year 7 (it’s very possible). That way you can mention you’ve improved in high school and picked up a few skills. I don’t think excs matter too much and what you got right now should be enough so don’t do stuff you don’t enjoy and only do for the sake of your application.

Sydney girls only takes in very few people (2-3) from my understanding into year 8 and so does basically every other school and there will be around 100+ people trying out since year 8 entry is the most competitive year. If you don’t make it, don’t feel discouraged because you have a whole lot more opportunities for year 9 entry and I think they make a new class in year 11 so there’s so many more opportunities to get in. If you’re genuinely interested in getting into a selective school, really try push yourself throughout high school cause I personally regret not doing that and I basically bummed my entire year with a report full of Bs and Cs. Being in a partial selective school is already really good depending on your goals and what they’re strong in; my school isn’t ranked that well but it’s very competitive in maths and I wanna pick up 4U math anyways so im in no rush to leave my school.

In terms of the edutest, it’s 5 sections that’s like 30 minutes each and the questions really aren’t too hard but the timing is. If you’ve got money I HIGHLY recommend buying resources which @spiderlemonade probably knows the names of since she made it into ruse via edutest. As of now I don’t recommend preparing or even stressing for it and I just recommend building passive skills like doing daily math challenges, puzzles, and reading. That will build a strong foundation of knowledge you can use throughout high school and during the test cause personally I struggled w the reading since I couldn’t focus and never really read books. Now im reading a pretty good novel everyday for an hour or two and avoiding TikTok fully but that’s just me. Do whatever works for you honestly

As for a goal you should aim for to get entry into year 7, I recommend As in every core subject (Eng, math, science), maybe in pdh and geo/history too but it isn’t as important. At a minimum, try get 70% As and 30% Bs and AVOID Cs at all costs, that will ruin your entry. Even though you didn’t do well in year 7, I guarantee you can do much better in high school since it’s more structured and routine based than primary school where you walk in not knowing what ur learning. In the edutest, you should aim for superior bands (top 10%) in all subsections and if you can’t, one top 25% is fine but that’s the maximum you can lose.

Sorry for the yap but I genuinely hope I helped. You’ve got a lot of potential at the moment and really high goals so I really do wish you all the best in year 7 cause it’s the most chaotic year of high school. Also, everything I said is all speculation and sydney girls could coincidentally have like 20 spots but usually, when a school says they only give spots if someone leaves, that basically means 2-5 spots since no one really leaves. I also recommend branching out to other schools based on your interest since some schools have better faculties and learning environments than others, even if they’re ranked lower.

One final tip: Don’t stress about the edutest until a month before, use this time to build passive skills and understand what the test is and school you wanna make looks like. If you don’t make it, don’t give up since year 8 entry is the most competitive of them all.

GOODLUCK!!

Hey, Ik im a little late to the conversation but do u have any more tips? This yr I want to try for sg again (entry into yr10) but I haven't made it in the past 2 tries. My main areas of struggle are the maths subjects.
For ability tests (potential) verbal reasoning above average up from high average, numerical reasoning above average up from low average
TESTS OF ACHIEVEMENT (PERFORMANCE)- Reading Comprehension superior, the same, mathematics average, up from low average, Written Expression high average down from superior. I hope that makes sense :). My portfolio is pretty strong (zone cross country twice in a row, dance international summer schools, math Olympiad top 10% and top 25% in all of Australasia-have medal to prove, good reports, no marks under 90%, went to OC-I think 2nd in state or sm like that, and I currently go to a selective skl but it's only part selective-I'm in the selective stream tho, debating, public speaking medals and more that I'm not bothered to list out- academic, athletics and dance related). My yr8 semester 2 report i only got 1 B in music. I think semester 1 i got 2 Bs but not in the core subjects, I think music and geo. I'm going to try join debating or sm in yr9 too. Do you know any good sites to find tests or something? What should I do to strengthen myself? Is my portfolio strong enough to make it into interviews if i do pass the test? I rlly want to give myself the best chance to get in next yr. Thank u!!

Hey, first of all that’s a VERY good portfolio so the rule of thumb is it’s better to have 1 very good exc than 5 random ones cause if ur very strong in one of your excs you can use it in the interview when they ask you about resilience and whatever so you can briefly go like ‘i also did state for it which taught me a lot’. Do not pick up excs for the sake of your portfolio and only do stuff youre genuinely interested in.

Excs aren’t important and are mainly used just to show the school you have a life outside of school and something you can talk about during the interview. Same goes to reports and if you aren’t getting straight As in all core subjects, you’ll lose your spot to someone else.

Edutest is where it gets important cause that’s the main thing they use to determine your entry. I think if you maintain your reports and excs you should be fine but in the edutest, try score 4 superiors. I’m pretty much the opposite of you so I’d love a bit of help in English subjects but for math i recommend just doing daily practice. You can use AI to ask for some daily math problems or use free resources online which im not too aware of since im not worrying about edutest until a month before the test. If you do have a budget there are many good online resources for money which would definitely help you out like the official website as it gives you a feel of the question types. You can then ask AI to make it year 10 level and that should do the trick. Getting good at maths is way easier in my opinion since you just gotta do a small bit of practice each day

Sydney girls may not take you in for year 10 entry if you get less than 4 superiors and that’s normal cause they only open 0-5 spots in years 8x10. Year 11 is where you should really lock in cause they open a class of 15 students. As of now I wouldn’t worry about edutest or preparation just yet and build passive skills and slowly try improving your mental math

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!! Smartboiiii And uh if it's not too personal have you done the test before? And what school do u go to? TYY

Soo my main points:
- try to get straight A's on my yr 7 school report
- Aim for superior bands

But the thing is i dont NEED to transfer like i can wait but i WANT to get in, so i cant buy any resources or anything. Does anyone know any free resources? and btw what books do u recommend reading? AND does anyone know the question types in the test?
TYY Again! :)))))
Yeah I’ve done the test last year for hast and edutest and I barely prepared (maybe like a few days before??) and as expected I didn’t do that well. In case u were wondering I scored this in the edutest

average (middle 20%):
Verbal reasoning (I suck at that)

High average (top 40%):
Reading comprehension

Above average (top 23%):
Mathematics
Numerical reasoning
Writing (idk how that happened)

No superiors tho :(

The school I go to is a pretty personal question but it’s a public school with a gifted stream that im in

Those two points are pretty good so achieve those and you should get in

I’m not much of a reader so I can’t recommend much but I have read throne of the glass for a while cause my friend let me borrow it (pretty good fantasy novel)

Idk much free resources myself but you could try searching stuff online and see what you get. I also don’t know if I can say much about the question types cause I don’t wanna mislead you but there should be countless YouTube videos you can watch and get a feel of the edutest. The edutest itself isn’t hard (except VR which was straight gibberish) but there’s very heavy time pressure cause they expect u to do like 50 somewhat easy questions in 30 minutes

I would not use the official website's practice papers cause they're easier than the test, instead use NotesEdu
I never used NotesEdu so I can’t really say anything but the edutest website did definitely have a similar vibe to the actual test, just a much different difficulty. Like the edutest’s verbal reasoning was MUCH harder than the practice website so I just gave up and guessed basically every question 💀

I mean cause spiderlemonade recommends NotesEdu then 100% use it since she actually made it into ruse and scored like 4 superiors

But I don’t have much money anyways and my parents won’t let me used paid resources so I’ve basically been broke my entire life and had to actually get a j*b. After finding I couldn’t find much free edutest resources I’ve basically given up on trying to train specifically for edutest/hast and now im doing daily reading + math problems and trying to Dow ell in school. NotesEdu is kind of expensive but probably has really good quality so if you got the money definitely use it but if u don’t (like me), buying one sample from edutest for 40 bucks and then getting AI to make it difficult has actually helped me a lot since it told me my weak points and how to improve.

Everyone studies differently tho like for me I hate the pomodoro technique and study by giving myself an end goal everyday rather than a structured schedule cause I won’t feel the same way everyday.

NotesEdu does have free samples tho and I tried it and it was really good quality so I might try get it.

sorry for yapping so much but yeah, do whatever works best for you
A few days and u got those scores???
bro if I studied a few days I would have got bottom 1% 😭😭 y’all are too smart. And thx again for all the advice 😃😃
