Yeah I’ve done the test last year for hast and edutest and I barely prepared (maybe like a few days before??) and as expected I didn’t do that well. In case u were wondering I scored this in the edutest

average (middle 20%):
Verbal reasoning (I suck at that)

High average (top 40%):
Reading comprehension

Above average (top 23%):
Mathematics
Numerical reasoning
Writing (idk how that happened)

No superiors tho

The school I go to is a pretty personal question but it’s a public school with a gifted stream that im in

Those two points are pretty good so achieve those and you should get in

I’m not much of a reader so I can’t recommend much but I have read throne of the glass for a while cause my friend let me borrow it (pretty good fantasy novel)

Idk much free resources myself but you could try searching stuff online and see what you get. I also don’t know if I can say much about the question types cause I don’t wanna mislead you but there should be countless YouTube videos you can watch and get a feel of the edutest. The edutest itself isn’t hard (except VR which was straight gibberish) but there’s very heavy time pressure cause they expect u to do like 50 somewhat easy questions in 30 minutes

hi just to help u out what i did i halved my time according to the number of questions im doing for example, 20 qs in 10 mins to build that speed an accuracy. n js i did get a superior by only studying during the holidays b4 the exam on my 1st attempt

ok so 4 writing read the prompts carefully n include it in ur writing, the more u do, the better chances of high avg or superiors n when given 5mins at the start to plan first plan the story well but not too detailed or long or short. for conclsuions idk prob just write quicker so u have more time to finish the story cuz a guys ik said conclusion r really imp since its the ending of the story n tells the marker if the student rlly conveyed what they wanted to say regarding the topic n whether they used the prompts effectively. perhaps u can wrie from 1st person or 2nd to make it good n easier to finish the story withing 15 or less min.

for numerical its more abt calculations, patterns, problems - solving questions which inlcude ordering smt n finding 1 or last or a specific person whose behing idk 1st person etc. verbal it more of vocab n sentences stuff. like i kinda forgot but i have doc regarding edutest n some elses one so if u want i can send it to u ?

It was my first time doing it so I didn’t really have any strategy going in other to just ‘do the questions’. Anything too hard or looked like it would take forever I’d just not do and if I have time at the end I’ll do it and if not I’ll guess.. im probably not the best person for advice cause I couldn’t even get a single superior but there are definitely other really smart people here

TYYY sooooo much!!!! I'm rlly srry for yapping. but i have TWO more question
How would i study for Numerical Reasoning and Verbal reasoning?
AND: How can i do well in writing when i only have 15 minutes?? grrrrr this is stressful

Wait was writing 15 minutes? I swear it was 30 but I genuinely can’t remember.

Anyways numerical reasoning was really simple since it was more like consequential maths where u had to find the pattern and maybe some basic algebra, nothing too stressful though. Just basic math with heavy time pressure

Verbal reasoning was a heavy hitter for me personally cause the questions were so strange. I remember one of them where it was like ‘all blops are glops. Some glops are dops. No hops are wops. Which of the following statements is true? Some hops are dops.’ I’d say like 30% of the questions were like this and then 20% were like ‘5 people on an 5 storey building, each on different floors are from 5 different counties. Tim lives 2 stories under the person from Argentina’ super weird stuff. Then the final 50% were word based where it was like 4 words are similar spot the odd one out or just ‘sun is to earth as leaf is to _’.

Writing wasn’t too bad for me even though I wrote in tier 1 vocabulary I maintained a pretty good structure and had figurative language every now and then. I think I didn’t get superior cause I didn’t use much lexical density but I had a very strong structure. Honestly for writing I got no other tips but reading and writing practice narratives since you’ll 80% chance get a narrative. They give you a stimulus/image and you have to write a story with that scene included.

Overall I personally think all sections weren’t too bad and mathematics was more theory based and scenario math where you had to calculate prices and stuff. Reading comprehension was just half correcting sentence punctuation and half reading. Not too bad but the passages do get long

Anyways I feel like year 8 entry is wayyyy too competitive so if you really want that Sydney girls you probably should actually start working hard early

just go to studocu and downlaod all the edutest related resources there is so much stuff. just diligently do all of them going through your mistakes and also do the selective thinking skills questions as they are also similar asw mathematics is easy if yoiu know the basic index laws and stuff. writing i already had a basic narrative scaffold that i could adapt to the stimulus and for verbal im ngl i just got a vibe from the words and derived a definition from that and used process of eliminiation asw. i didnt make it in baulko as my school is ranked sub 200 this year but i got 3 sups and i think you need 4 or 5 to get in so yh if you do it properly you can make it p.s. for the all hops are slops are plops are grops all trops are mops just draw a venn diagram it really helps to visuliase it

im not blaming my school rank im just saying that it contributed like but i would not have gotten in i wouldve needed to get 4 or 5 to stand a chance but yes it does influence as it is easier to get an a in a lower rank than a higher rank
