There's quite a few really strong people and most people do the Asian 5 (I'm assuming its similar at your school?). Someone in my year accelerated 4U maths last year and state ranked in MX2 and got 100 in MX1. He's really strong in english, chem and phys as well so I reckon he'll dux it. I don't care if I dux or not though, I just want to get around 99.7 to get into Comm/Law (which will depend on my english performance).

Well I'm in Year 11 LOL but we have a possible State Ranker in Chem as an accelerant (we have an accel. Chem Program). She also came 1st in MATHS, SCIENCE AND HISTORY LAST YEAR and so far is coming first in 2u+3u maths, accel. chem, phys and bio. so yea, she's probs gonna get dux.

We had a lot of people leave at the end of YR 10 (18), which is way more than any other selective and basically the cream of the crop at our school got evenly distributed to Ruse and Baulko

WE ONLY HAVE 10-ISH PEOPLE IN THE GRADE DOING THE "ASIAN 5" (wtf) but we have about 45 people doing the other "Asian 5" with Biology instead of Econ.
Personally, I'm coming 1st in Chem and Eco and top 30-ish for 2u+3u maths, but we haven't got any other results back yet.

Sure, you know the weightings which you mentioned earlier for your topic tests and assignments? Both topic tests were 5% from what I recall and the assignment you did was worth 20%.

Now, your marks were something like 50, 15 and 96 respectively. So you work out how much is 50% of 5, 85% of 5 and 4% of 20 (bearing in mind the fact that i'm finding how much percentage you've lost of each test). Then, if you punch in those calculations, you get approximately 8% lost out of the 100.

Some people are saying that we choose our subjects in term 4, some are saying term 2. When is it going to be?

And when you give in your selection form, do they consider everything you did before that to determine whether you should be allowed to do a subject or do they consider your marks for the whole year?

Your subject selection depends on your school. It is not a set date.
And again, it depends on the school as to what they decide are the determining factors for whether or not you are allowed to do a subject.

my work ethic has been ruined due to laziness in Year 10.
Tip to Year 9 and 10 kids: Don't be lazy and learn ahead if you think the current stuff is too easy or is not useful to you.
Also, especially for Mathematics and Science, get SOME foundation:
E.g. I didn't pay attention in the electricity topic in Year 9 Science, now I'm hating the electricity topic in Year 11.

Being prepared for the senior years is important.

Can I just summarise everything for Yr 10's:
- First of all, ENJOY Year 10, its a fun year- there shouldn't be too much stress
- Pick subjects based on what you are good at and like. This will make up for scaling, plus you'll find it way easier to study
- Focus on UNDERSTANDING rather than rote-learning. Someone who gets a topic will smash someone who just memorised the textbook- plus its requires less study time before tests
- Don't worry about external influences. Do your best because ultimately that's all you can do. Don't worry about getting X A's or whatever. If you understand everything, the results will flow naturally

You sound just like my brother. He's doing coastal management as well... I used to hate Yr 10 Geo as well (I think its a common theme statewide). Did you like junior geo though?

Is your brother a Syd. Tech genius like you? haha. I think that the Geography course was interesting at some parts e.g International Aid, Trade but I had EXTREME DISTASTE towards the environmental geography aspect of the course e.g urban growth and decline, waste management and what not.

The Year 11 and 12 syllabus is much more engaging compared to the Year 10 syllabus. When I was in high school, the teachers acknowledged this as well, often saying that whenever there was a conference for teachers where they would discuss the syllabus, the content was a common complaint for the subject.

If it wasn't so dry, many more students would find out that the Geography is actually a very interesting subject.

Really? Do you mind sharing some of the interesting things learnt in HSC Geography? I find that Geography from years 7 - 10 is the same thing and if we do learn something new, it's not interesting!

I think another factor is that people are easily attracted to the higher scaling subjects.
If Geography scaled higher than Chemistry and Physics, I'm quite certain that Geography would be chosen by many Asians (it's the truth).
But since Geography doesn't scale that well and seems quite dry due to Aus Geo in yr 9 and 10, barely anyone picks it.

I agree with what you said but I want to give it a chance, if it is much better in years 11 and 12, I might choose it
