if you can impress in an interview, go for sydney boys - and boast your sporting/extracurricular credentials in the interview.

theres 1 or 2 dropkicks who made it in to this school on the basis of being able to do well in interview, having good sporting/extracurricular shit and above average marks.

you don't get pushed at caringbah. at all. so if you're going for that, DON'T!!!!! i really hate it. i'm almost in my last term of year twelve, my english teacher just had a week off to go to some stupid schoolboy league tournament, my maths teacher's been away for the last three weeks until the end of term, and my french teacher has been away the same amount of time as my maths teacher, and we have really really bad subs. so really, don't bother unless you are EXTREMELY desperate. i live down the street basically and i went from my old school because of the travel, and i'd rather be travelling three-four hours a day than going to caringbah where it takes me about ten minutes to get to.

that being said, some of our teachers & our deputy principal are great, it's just the lack of commitment i guess that pisses me off [leaving a private school in year 10 was not a good idea, maybe it's made me elitist, but just saying it as it is.] and you really don't get pushed, it's a lot about self motivation too.

caringbah doesn't have a test, it's based on report, cover letter, and then you go in for an interview after you've been accepted already.

Why waste time traveling to your selective school or meeting the school's obligations which are tougher and at times unnecessary compared to your nearest high school?

Have to admit this is true to a fair extent, because if you aren't ready to handle the competition in a selective school, it's going to be very rough, rankings and all that jazz. Local schools save you travelling time, meaning more time to study.

i go to caringbah. i agree with dani (hermand), the teaching quality is incredibly disappointing, but its the kids that are selected, not the teachers.

don't get me wrong its a good school. and 2/3 of the teachers are fantastic. obviously there are great teachers and dud teachers at every school, but don't be going to public selective expecting a lineup of teachers each having visionary brilliance.

you can do well at caringbah of course. its good for sport and music as well. depends what your priorities are i guess. i wouldn't write caringbah off as a whole, but there is indeed a disappointingly large amount of teachers who are really just terrible.

i reckon we have about 10% of teacher's who i'd say are fantastic, know their subject, know how to teach it, just good in every way etc.. depends on the faculty to how many of these amazing teachers you get. the history faculty is exclusively brilliant. 4 out of 4 teachers are very very good.

about 70% are 'satisfactory'. they know their stuff, but vary in their ability to conduct classes effectively. some are not too bad.

the last 20% are absolute duds. have little knowledge of actual subject, let alone ability to explain it effectively. we have one english teacher who isn't allowed to teach past year 10 level due to the volume of complaints about her lack competence. some faculties have one, some two, some none. but there are too many of these teachers at a selective high school.

Mate James Ruse has quite a few dud techers as well, of course there are brilliant ones but there are some terrible ones as wel.. 4/5 Physics classes in Year 11 have teachers that I wouldn't really like. 2/7 Chem classes have the saem problem. The Geo class has the same problem. Ditto Music. Ditto 4/8 Maths classes, ditto 3-4/8 English classes. Every school has good and bad teachers. It's the students, and I'm fairly sure Caringbah has a competitive environment that drives students.

haha yeah. works well when you actually do well. when you fail [not literally, but in my sense yes] because of the immense amount of pressure you put on yourself, it's not cool.

How many students does Sydney Boys High School accept in year 11, 2010?

They normally have a form of 210 students, but in saying that, this year's year 11 is only around 200 (apparently they are a dodgy year). In the past SB have taken in about 30 guys in year 11, but I think this year was the last year where they were taking in so many guys for year 11 (there were around 17 new kids in year 11) -They've decided to take in the majority of guys in year 9 now.

Not sure of current numbers of this years year 10 though.

haha, no, my report says i'm awesome basically. application 1 [best one] for every subject, not that i deserve it. it's the home time where i lose out. i should say my 'potential', not what i expect of myself. i get told A LOT about my potential. it's just yet to surface in exams. haha.

Wow at Caringbah High School, academics and sporting. Heres a theoretical question, concerning my friend, lets say academically at school he achieves a position in the top ten for all or most of your subjects (yes, he knows that the school he attends is a dependant factor) and he is a state basketballer. Will his chances of making it into a selective high school improve dramatically or just slightly (because usually selective schools are more focused on academic success) due to his sporting achievements?

ha i'm the opposite. my comments are like.. well yeah he gets good marks, but he does jack all in class. i find that annoying because i don't like it when its proven that there is no link between how well ben listens and how well be ends up going, its bad for my sense self assurance and any feeling of worth in my career.
