    The place of private healthcare

For those relying on Iron's initial post, here's a reasonable article that outlines the intentions of the ACT Government and opposition to the transaction from Catholic circles - Gallagher, Pell row over Calvary - Local News - News - General - The Canberra Times It's a shame that the...

    The place of private healthcare

Ah, no. The insulation program is a part of the Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan, and as the Government has stated: Source (see bottom of page). In any event, any and all Government programs are open to policy review in light of changing circumstances and new priorites...

    The place of private healthcare

The ACT government has publicly claimed that the purchase will properly integrate Calvary hospital into the wider health system, allowing better (and streamlined) planning of health resources across the ACT. To my mind that is a reasonable argument. As for a Catholic institution having a...

What should define a successful minor party?

Is it a willingness to negotiate (effective outcomes) or is it long term parliamentary survival (electoral outcomes)? Reason for thread - Australian Democrats: The passing of an era.

    A win for fathers?

In a disturbing way, it's almost comforting to know that Serius still hates women. I guess that some things will never change.

    Happiness

OK Yes, provided that said policies are inclusive and, on balance, do not create further social dislocation through prioritising certain 'paths' to happiness (sport, for instance). I don't like the prioritisation of sport. It's a little like community... On the one hand it's great...

    $300 monitors

I were to buy one of the many $300 22" widescreen monitors currently on the market, which brand should I buy? LG, Benq, Viewsonic, etc.? I'm aware of the colour, construction and dead pixel issues that tend to plague these cheap monitors, but I'm looking to maximise my $300, not blow a $500+...

    Whatever happened to The Age?

Once a reasonable paper with a clear centre-left editorial line, but now it's the Spencer Street Soviet all the way, hey. That's about it. Anyone else?

    2008 Presidential Election - Obama v McCain

As an outsider I would have liked to have seen Hillary Clinton take the Democratic nomination, but that was probably expecting too much. Back on topic... I'm not fussed, to tell the truth. Australia will no doubt putter along in the wake of a McCain or Obama administration, and I'm sure the...

    Rudd v Binge Drinking

Re: Nicola Roxon is a disgraceful fucking wowser Quite hard for some.

take action in protecting environment or else

Actually, the recent increase in shark numbers is a result of cleaner coastal waters and new and improved management practices that protect sharks and other marine creatures. Climage Change is a serious issue that we must address, but crap like the above only muddies the waters.

Permanent Resident not Eligible for Hecs/CSP?

Quite a few of 'us*' do that, too. *Australian citizens.

    Rudd Government to censor internet

In all fairness to Mr Rudd, this has been a part of Labor's policy platform since March 2006. It was Labor, but back in 2005 many Liberals were (and probably still are) in favour of such a system of filtering/censorship. (Links taken from here.)

2007 Federal Election - Coalition or Labor/Howard or Rudd?

Though not as bad as the Coalition's interest rates pledge in 2004, the ALP did create the impression that it would take steps to 'address' the essential costs of living. That they would address such concerns by examining the issues may be a crucial point, but hey, who cares about such a...

    The Discworld

I've got Alzheimer's: Terry Pratchett Unseen Academicals, a tale that should involve Rincewind and the Luggage... Such a tale woud be a fitting end to the series, but here's to hoping that Mr Pratchett continues to be well for as long as possible (for the sake of the man and the not the...
