Re: Should English be Compulsory?

English should be compulsory but it shouldn't be all about the literature study that it is, it should be more about proper language use, grammer, spelling all that shit (I know we were taught that from K-10 but you still see so many people who can't spell, read or puncuate in senior schools), more about stuff you'll actually use in your life.

And if it was like that everyone would bitch and moan about how boring it was. For English its lose lose, because being the ohso rebellious teens we are, we hate being told we HAVE to do anything.

You will always need to know how to prepare and give a speech, write an essay and think critically and analytically.
English does this and makes it interesting to boot through conceptual modules.

As it stands, if nothing else, HSC English (Advanced and Ext particularly) add another layer of meaning to your consumption of film, literature and media. How often have you watched a movie and gone "thats a quote from [insert studied Shakespeare play]!" or something?

Re: Should English be Compulsory?

Yes; it should.

Because if it weren't compulsory, you wouldn't be able to understand your society or the individuals within it. English, in senior years of school, is based heavily on philosophical ideals and thesis, so apart from teaching you grammar, language, communication skills and generally how to deal with social situations; it also enables you to gain a sense of morality and ability to make decisions, through studying literature that deals with different circumstances, throughout differing contexts.

If you're not good at english, then there's always that chance that you're being mocked, you just can't pick up the sarcasm, irony, satire or any other technique in what they're saying or you're doing.

Re: Should English be Compulsory?

I think English should be compulsory up to year 10, then students should be allowed to drop it from their senior school.

It sucks to have it counted towards my UAI!

lol, exaggeration much?

The current course doesn't teach grammar, spelling, writing styles or jack shit really. If you can form readable sentences and write as much as possible (and have a good memory) then you will ace it.

Teaches you how to deal with social situations? Thanks for the amusing read. :D

Edit: A history subject teaches you how to write essays just as much as English, but the content is way more relevant and beneficial, why not make 2 units of history compulsory?

BTW, I'm finished with English now so I don't really give a shit, I came close to top in Advanced in my year and I agree 100% that there are enough of these threads and they won't change anything. :)

I'd actually really like to see a World History course or equivalent compulsory for years 11 and 12, even if it didnt count to the UAI.

Not knowing about world events and ones that have passed is .. wrong. It makes you socially illiterate.

EDIT; Before ya'll jump on me, I'm quite aware this will probably never happen and is a product of my personal love of history.

I know what you mean though. Better if in the junior years than senior IMO. There is a lot of fucking around (for lack of better words) in years 9 and 10 that could be used to learn more about historic events and place geography. A lot of people don't know which continent basic countries are in or why they built the great wall of china. ;)

I think the 7-8 element of History/Geography needs to be tightened and really should have been built up from Senior Primary school.

While 9-10 was good in terms of Australian History, I would argue its only downfall is that its studied in a bubble. Its about the Australian Experience rather than the events themselves.

I still believe its socially irresponsible to be ignorant of history though. How can you formulate an opinion about current events when you dont understand their prologue, so to speak?

It was only an entertaining read, cause I wrote it in english. Which, without the subject, for you, would be very limited. And yes, they do teach you to deal with some social situations. For example, in the 19th century, Wildes Picture of Dorian Gray dealt with the issue of homosexuality in a conservative english society. There are texts like that for every society. It's called literature.

No, it shouldn't be compulsory. Its pretty much a waste of time anyway....there are more better subjects that can be taken up but because of this, we can't.

Are you fucking serious? The scope for learning from English for morality is highly limited. What kind of subjects would teach students to do that or this in a way that would hurt others. Of course they try to teach them the right way regardless of the subject. And no, English is heavily involved in other things apart from teaching morality. I reckon SOR I does the best in regards to teaching relevant morality to students but in saying that, our morality is not shaped by English or any other subjects. It gets its influence from far greater things...such as parents, mates, friends, and everyone around us.

Re: Should English be Compulsory?

Society and Culture and SOR are the best for education students in terms of morality and social responsibility. When I started the course, my SaC teacher said "This is one of the only courses in the HSC that values your true feelings, and aims to make you a better social and interpersonal individual".
And its true.

Yes, but they are not even relevant though. If you ask people what their main sources of teaching for morality, they wouldn't say "SOR I or Society & Culture" because there are more than 70% of the students in the state who don't even do SOR and Society & Culture. They would probably say that they are most influenced by other factors, which is probably true.

But we were talking about subjects in general, not popular or 'relevant' subjects. And in general terms if you want a subject to teach you moralities and respect for other cultures and beliefs, SaC and SOR are the ones that provide that in their course studies.

Also, I don't believe school is where you should be growing moral character, and particularly not in grade 11 and 12. Your family should be the predominate socialisation factor upon moral developement, and if you dont have a fair bit by 17-18, a course isn't going to provide it all nice and neat for you.

That's why I said "yes" in the first place. I agree with you but I just don't think what I initially brought out is relevant (i.e. saying that SOR is relevant for teaching morality) because not many people do SOR I. Pretty much same story for S&C too.

Re: Should English be Compulsory?

I'm sorry but personal preference should not come into this debate - English shouldn't be made an elective just because a lot of people don't like the topic.

Anywayys, English SHOULD, and always will be, made compulsory -- the question is however on the content that is being taught. If anyone is learned enough they can see how many postmodernist assumptions are implicit in every single module. It's ridiculous.
Similarly, the English Advanced (and I'd assume Standard) syllabi revolve around texts 'representations of TEXT', 'TEXTS, values & context', 'critical study of TEXT', 'comparative study of TEXT'. The focus should not be on texts, it's more a class of literature than anything (with films, etc thrown in) -- the focus instead should be clearly set in the English language itself.

I'm drawling here and LOL you can tell I've been writing English practice responses 5 minutes before writing this -- I sound like a douche.

But yeah, just because you f'ers can't deal with letters (not pronumerals) and words instead of your 'precious numbers', doesn't mean that it should be labelled redundant.

even tho i dont really like english i think it has to be compulsory, no argument here - its the language we communicate in here in Australia

and tho i really like maths i dont think it should be compulsory
