I got a question- im trying out for the selective school for entry into year 11 and was wondering what is the difference between the HAST, EDUTEST and the selective test? They seem similar but how are the question styles different?

selective is held in yr 6 in nsw and yr 8 in vic (correct me if im wrong) for entry into the next year of high school, so it's a one time thing that a large number of ppl do. vic uses edutest for their selective entry and so do some top selective schools in nsw for yr 8-11 entry (so if you want to get into a selective school after yr 6 selective). hast is the yr 8-11 entry exam that most selectives in sydney use. the difficulty obv changes as you write it in diff years, so if i do edutest or hast in yr 10 compared to yr 8 its not the same exam and it will be harder.

i have sat all three exams (in sydney, idk about vic) and performed competitively and imo edutest is the hardest out of all of them, mainly because of the time pressure. you have about 30-45 sec per question in edutest if you want to be competitive (depending on your strengths and also which section it is). the question types are generally similar but i think edutest is def harder considering how much time you get and there is a reason why top selective schools like ruse use it for 8-11 entry. i dont even know what to say abt selective rn bc im in yr 11 and after doing edutest the selective exam i wrote feels like a breeze but then again i have no clue what the new updates selective test looks like so i wouldnt take my word on that.

oh ok i see yeah the selective is held the year before the high school starts (year 7-year 12) so the test is in year 6.
idk tbh cause i was looking at the selective schools and what test you have to take for them. and i cmae across Baulkham Hills and for entry into year 8-11 u need to take the edutest but the other schools likes fort street and all u have the acer hast. and I im trying to practice for them but i cant really figure out if I should study for the hast differently then the edutest.

uhh if you still have a choice i would not recommend doing both hast and edutest in the same year (not sure if you were planning to). and about how you should study for each test, depends on which ones you are doing.

if you are doing just edutest and are serious about it, purchase the official edutest tests (which you have access to when you enrol through the school) because they are the best kind of practise you can get out there. if you are doing just acer see my reply above about those test banks like notesedu (which by the way are not very reputable bc acer doesnt put out practice tests for higher grades for people too refer to but if youre doing hast it's your best bet). if you are doing both i would say do just edutest practise, because i feel there is overlap and studying for both seperately will be overwhelming and considering you have to keep up your school grades for selective admission i would not suggest both (please consult someone who has done hast more recently tho, like i said im not entirely sure and stupid acer doesnt have practice papers for yr 10).

to my understanding, yeah that is the main difference, but considering i did edutest at a higher grade level i think its natural that i would find it harder, maybe acer also gets harder but i hear that its easier in comparison.

i actually did edutest in yr 9 for yr 10 entry, sorry abt the confusion. i just used the edutest practice papers and grinded them and also looked up question types that i didnt really get e.g. in numerical reasoning i sucked at matrices so i searched up 'matrix questions numerical reasoning' and a bunch of yt results from other exams like the yr 6 selective or job stuff came up and they provided explanations and strategies - this works for the reasoning and math sections. i did hast in yr 7 and 8 so i cant give concrete advice about that because the only acer prac papers available cater to yr 7 and 8 and also this was kind of a long time ago and things could have changed.

huge disclaimer i was in yr 9 2 years ago so there could have been changes (to my knowledge there aren't) but get other people's advice too. good luck!!!

i got really ambitious and tried for ruse and then nsg loll. from what i know they take your marks and rank you in bands based on the ppl that wrote edutest in your specific cohort. so i didnt make it for ruse but i got an interview for nsg pretty early on and decided to drop out of the waitlist thing before i got in (still dont know whether or not i would have gotten in but even before they had taken kids in i was 2nd in line or smth like that). kind of a stupid decision bc i go to penrith right now which is ranked way lower but i have to travel close to 4 hours each school day both ways for nsg (assuming there aren't any transport delays) and i ultimately decided it wasn't worth it loll

The official edutest tests were extremely useless. Cause they are really easy in comparison to what is given in the test. Its also extremely misleading. You can lose like 2 marks in the edutests practice tests, and this is not a good indicator by any means to what will happen in the real test. This is generally a very honest opinion as someone who sat the tests last year and made all the top 3 schools: baulko, nsb, ruse (which all do edutest). SAVE YOUR MONEY.

So what I would recommend for anyone sitting edutest:
The test is heavily a game of speed and not knowledge and skill. The "skill" is being able to identify the pattern, formula, or whatever related to the question and quickly answering it. Nothing should make you sit there and just ponder for 1 min, the questions aren't designed for that. If you find yourself pondering, just skip and come back.

An important thing I learnt, although it sounds inherently trivial, is that EVERY QUESTION IS WORTH THE SAME. No matter how hard they are they are worth the EXACT same. One Mark. So if you skip a question sure you may drop that "one mark" but in return you gain 5 marks of easier questions later on because you skipped it and sacrificed that mark. I hope that's clear enough. So don't feel bad or worried cause you skipped a question.

If you want a general marker of what to expect. The numerical reasoning and verbal reasoning last year was pretty cooked. in the sense that speed was not in your favour. but I vividly recall being totally unsure about the last 10 questions because of time. I was like many others and didn't realise how important speed was. the questions weren't inherently "hard" I just pondered too long on different questions and didn't understand that "one mark" concept. And then albeit those 10, we can safely assume I may have dropped AT LEAST 5 in the rest of the paper just from general mistakes.

while this was a year ago, that's legit a 45/60 (maybe on the lower end and a bit lenient), that still got me a superior (highest band). The tests are pretty cooked regardless of how good you may be. I think if I approached it different I would've scored much better, but that's in the past and it's calm. BUT DONT BE LIKE ME

Anyways, yuh the notesedu has some pretty good resources, victorian selective school tests, there is a TSS vocabulary sheet for anyone looking to improve vocab and that stuff. Generally just search in google "Selective school Victoria Questions" or "Edutest Practice". Legit do HAST practice or ACER test practice it doesn't matter. The questions may vary but the concepts are the same.

And then for those worrying about the test. don't.

It's really not that big of a decision factor. The test is more of a "barrier of entry". It just "separates" the applicants to make applications easier to review. I mean a school reviewing 500 applications is tedious. But the test can basically categorise the top "some number" and then "prioritise" those applications. This number is still pretty big. BUT DON'T BE DECEIVED. You still have to perform well. But don't think there are "10 spots", I must come top 10 or something. No, it's legit just a precursor to your application. It allows the school to dwindle down the number of applications they have to look at. So just perform relatively good and let your application speak for itself.

Obviously on the other end of the spectrum, you can look to perform EXCEPTIONAL in the test and stand as an outlier to the school. but if you can do that, props to you, I have nothing to say. have fun at ruse cuh.

always impressed at how well Sethio writes. agree that edutest practice papers are useless. total waste of time and you might get a wrong impression that it is really easy.
for hast, i heard that you need to prepare for abstract reasoning.
